The office of Senegal President Macky Sall has announced he will cut short his stay at the United Nations General Assembly to return and address an interruption in water services that has affected large areas of the capital, Dakar, for nearly two weeks.
A statement issued by Sall's office late Tuesday said he would return to Dakar from New York after addressing the U.N. on Wednesday, two days earlier than his originally scheduled return. The statement said Sall will preside over a cabinet meeting Thursday.
The government has blamed the water stoppage on a "technical problem" involving equipment located hundreds of kilometers outside the city. The company in charge of providing water has missed multiple deadlines to resolve the problem, most recently on Tuesday morning.
